The Intersection of Science and Sentiment
Hello, I'm Gurnit Atwal, and welcome to my space where science meets sentiment. By day, I am a computational cancer biologist with a PhD in Computational Biology, immersed in the complex, structured world of cellular data and system analysis. My journey as a fine-art wildlife photographer, which began in Spring 2022 is not a divergence from this scientific lifeāit is a complementary exploration of the systems that define our natural world.
For me, photography is far more than the simple act of capturing a moment in time. It is a form of exploration and play, driven by a desire to explore feeling, composition, and aesthetic confrontation within the natural environment. My aim is not to simply photograph what something looks like, but to photograph what something is like. Capture its essence, and honour nature by representing it. My scientific training informs my photography - I treat new photographic ideas as hypotheses to be tested and refined with real world data (ie. many failed attempts at a decent image). My work stands for a deep nature connection. I seek out the unexpected moments, the unnoticed gems, the subtle textures, and the dramatic light that define wildlife and landscapes. My goal is to transform what I see into something that provokes a powerful, internal dialogue about the aesthetics of nature.
